Mark Carey writes:
Four things about Jesus and His way.
1. At the most dangerous moment Jesus goes public.
It is hard not to feel a bit insecure in a world that appears to be getting more dangerous. We are told in Mark 1:14 "After John was put in prison Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God". At the most dangerous moment - Jesus went public – He might have hidden away on hearing His cousin has been imprisoned but instead Jesus spreads out. The risk is great - but the reward is greater. God is not afraid; the good news of God can’t be stopped by a dangerous world…. In fact, because the world is dangerous…. Jesus brings good news.
2. He calls for immediate action for the sake of the kingdom
He calls disciples, us, to respond, leave things behind, go forward. This is a coming Kingdom that won’t be served by caretaking or undertaking but rather by risk-taking.
3. Being a ‘sent’ person is the state of being a follower of Jesus
In a disorientating world we are oriented by Jesus. He helps us make sense of how to live, how to come, like Him, with good news.
4. Jesus sees us
Just as he saw Simon and Andrew casting their nets, and James and John preparing their nets – He sees us in our activity and calls us to His activity. He sees each one of us as a person of great potential and leads us to be able live to our potential.
Jesus has good news to bring, and we get to be able to join in with it. We are risk takers, active kingdom people, sent people, those who are seen by Jesus and called. What a joy it is to follow Jesus in a dangerous world.
